Metal studs, crystals, and silk flowers: Fashion designers try their hand at football

The American football has been given a glitzy — if slightly impractical — makeover.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl on February 8, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) has teamed up with the National Football League (NFL) to create a series of bespoke, and often bejeweled, footballs.

Fifty designers — including big names such as Tiffany & Co and Betsey Johnson — have produced their own take on the normally brown leather ball. Gold leaf, tassels, metal spikes and other extravagant embellishments can be seen throughout the series.

Each piece is being auctioned online from now until February 14, and proceeds will go to the league’s charity, the NFL Foundation. The minimum starting bid is $500.
