Imagine calling a cab and the driver being none other than NFL Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice.
Some customers of Lyft, a ride sharing company, were surprised by the football star in San Francisco.
In the video posted on Lyft’s YouTube page, Rice, wearing dark sunglasses and a beanie, takes off his Super Bowl ring before going undercover.
“Do you think this might be too much of a giveaway?” Rice says, speaking of his ring.
Rice won three Super Bowl rings while playing for the San Francisco 49ers from 1985 to 2000.
His record of 208 touchdowns and 22,895 receiving yards won him induction into the Hall of Fame in 2010.
Rice went undercover in the same city where he played professional football, so one might think he would have been recognized quickly.
In the video, as he drives up and his unknowing customers get in the car, only one of the five seems to give him a second look.
One self-proclaimed 49ers fan didn’t recognize that the Hall of Famer was sitting right next to him.
“Who’s your team?” Rice asks his passenger.
“My team, it’s been the Niners, since I um was born and raised in San Jose,” said the passenger. “I am a big Niner guy.”
Another passenger says: “I grew up as a Niner. My whole family has been a Niners family.”
At one point during the rides, Rice takes an unexpected “stretch break” and a dance party ensues. Then he lets his passenger know his true identity.
“Loved going undercover as a [Lyft] driver in the Bay Area,” Rice tweeted.
This isn’t the first time an athlete has helped promote Lyft by going undercover as a driver for the company. In September 2015, Chicago Cubs rookie Kris Bryant picked up unsuspecting passengers in Chicago.
So next time you call for a ride, make sure you really check out who is driving you around.
