Johnsonburg Beats Cold Shooting Golden Tide, 59-26

CURWENSVILLE – Two cold offensive quarters did in the Curwensville Area High School boys basketball team Friday night against visiting Johnsonburg, losing 59-26.

The Golden Tide scored just one first quarter point, a free throw by Nick Stewart with 1:14 remaining, to go into the second frame trailing 13-1.

Head coach Shane Pentz of the Tide spoke about the start of the game by his squad, saying, “ We didn’t come out ready to play at all. And for some reason, lately, we have one bad quarter each game that does us in.”

The second eight minutes was a better offensive stretch for Curwensville, scoring nine points.

Senior Jake Terry had five tallies and fellow classmate Quamone Newkirk added four for the Tide in the second, but the defense gave up 21 as the Rams had a commanding 34-10 halftime bulge.

About the defense Pentz commented, “We couldn’t make anything on offense tonight and it effected our defensive effort the entire game. We definitely need to get back to playing defense, because tonight, for whatever reason, we just didn’t come ready to play.”

The best eight minute period for Curwensville was the third quarter when the Rams outscored the Golden Tide by just one point, 13-12.

Then Curwensville had another offensive meltdown quarter, scoring just four points in the final eight minutes.

Curwensville had no one in double figures on the evening but were paced by Terry with nine and Newkirk with eight.

Johnsonburg, 8-10,was led by junior Ryan Kilhoffer who scored 20 and Kevin Benson, a senior, who dumped in 13.

The Rams also won the first meeting between the two schools this year in early January, at home, winning 64-49.

In the junior varsity battle it was Johnsonburg coming away with a 42-39 overtime victory over Curwensville.

The Tide, now 2-16, travel to Flinton on Monday night for its next game, against the Vikings of Glendale, a team they defeated earlier this season 84-54 at home.

JV tips off at 6 pm with the varsity to immediately follow.
