Bernie Sanders is opening up a bit more, as his campaign heads into a critical stretch running from the Iowa caucuses to New Hampshire, and showing a home life that includes chopping wood, doing the laundry and owning just a few too many sweaters.
“If Bernie has seven sweaters, that’s three too many for him,” Sanders’ wife Jane told People magazine in an interview from their Vermont home published Thursday.
Larry David got laughs in October when, impersonating Sanders on “Saturday Night Live”, he said “I’m the only candidate up here who’s not a billionaire. I don’t have a Super PAC, I don’t have a backpack. I carry my stuff around loose in my arms like a professor between classes … I own one pair of underwear — that’s it.”
Sanders later clarified that he, in fact, has plenty of underwear.
But his family told People he likes things simple.
“If they still sold cars with manual locks and windows, that’s what Bernie would have,” said Heather Titus, one of Jane Sanders’ daughters from her first marriage.
His family emphasized that he not only does his own laundry and grocery shopping, but also does his own work around the house — from chopping wood to repairing screen windows. Jane Sanders recalled him tacking up the new screen, but never cutting away the excess screen, “so we had a window with a tutu. And he said, ‘Well, it works!'”
