Carson suspends campaigning Tuesday after car accident involving staffers

Ben Carson canceled campaign events for the day on Tuesday after three volunteers and one staffer for the retired neurosurgeon’s campaign were involved in a car accident.

The van they were in flipped on its side in Iowa after hitting a patch of ice, and was then struck by another vehicle, the campaign said in a statement.

Three of the passengers, including the campaign staffer driving, were being checked out at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa, but one volunteer was being transported to the trauma center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Carson, who was campaigning in South Carolina, is traveling to Omaha Tuesday afternoon to be with the volunteer’s family, the campaign said.
