Conservation District Holding Annual Tree sale

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Conservation District is now accepting orders as part of its annual tree sale to help fund its conservation education programs.

The CCCD offers a wide variety of evergreen and deciduous tree seedlings, fruit trees, blueberry bushes, mountain laurel bushes and azaleas.

CCCD staff members encourage planting trees and shrubs not only for aesthetic pleasure, but also for wildlife food and habitat, windbreaks, erosion control and stream buffers.

“Each year, we strive to offer something different than the year before, but we always offer our old standbys, too, like white pine, red oak and sugar maple seedlings,” said Amy Hallman, conservation specialist.

“We are also selling fruit trees, including apple, pear, peach, cherry and plum and a huge variety of containerized blueberry bushes, mountain laurels and azaleas.”

Hallman added, “Whether you’re looking to plant shrubs with showy flowers, trees that will attract wildlife or your own backyard orchard, the Conservation District Tree Sale has something for everyone.”

Hallman emphasized that all of the proceeds from the tree sale go towards providing conservation education programs in Clearfield County, such as the first-ever, fruit tree pruning workshop.

Hallman said this workshop will be held March 5 and is free to the public. She said it will provide instruction on basic fruit tree care, including fertilization, pollination, thinning and spraying information.

“Our tree sale also provides the funding we need to hold our annual Conservation Celebration at Curwensville Lake,” Hallman said.  “This event is free to the public and provides hands-on conservation-themed experiences for young and old alike.

“You can see live animal presentations and learn about their habitat and behaviors, try out fishing or kayaking on the lake with skilled instructors, build blue-bird houses, make crafts, play games and listen to a variety of educational presentations.”

This year’s Conservation Celebration will be held Sept. 10.
