Campus Corner: Barger Named MAC Wrestler of Week

WILLIAMSPORT — Unbeaten junior 165-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield) was named Middle Atlantic Conference Wrestler of the Week Monday after going 5-0 for host Lycoming at the 12-team Budd Whitehill National Duals in Lamade Gym Friday and Saturday.

Barger stretched his season-opening winning streak to 20 and earned 19 points for the Warriors en route to garnering all-tourney team laurels.

He pinned Brandon Gay of Trine (Ind.) at the 2:56 mark and decisioned Dylan Knisley of Millikin (Ill.) 7-1 and Timothy Garripoli of Williams (Mass.) 5-0 on the first day and handled Chris Nuss of Thiel 8-1 and Ryan Ward of Springfield (Mass.) 16-2 on the second day.

Knisley and Nuss are on the honorable mention list in d3wrestle.com’s NCAA Division III national rankings which have had Barger No. 2 all season.

Barger, who claimed the bronze medal at the 2015 NCAA Division III national championships, has a career record of 85-20, including 41-9 in dual meets.

Lycoming (10-6) beat Trine 41-6 and Thiel 37-6 and lost to Millikin 24-20, Williams 27-17 and Springfield 19-17 to place 10th.

MEN’S SWIMMING

WINTER PARK, Fla. — Freshman Michael Spencer (Clearfield) won the 50-yard freestyle and placed in two other sprints as undefeated Westminster trimmed Rollins College 153.5-103.5 in the nationally-ranked NCAA Division II team’s outdoor Alfond Pool Saturday.

Spencer claimed his first-place points in 22.30 seconds and then finished second in the 100 free in 49.56 and the 100 butterfly in 55.03.

The Titans are 7-0 and ranked No. 27 in NCAA Division III by college swimming.com’s.

EDINBORO — Freshman Alex Shugarts (Clearfield) was a member of Edinboro’s winning 200-yard freestyle quartet in the Fighting Scots’ 113-89 Senior Day victory over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival at McComb Fieldhouse Saturday.

His 22.65-second third split helped the Fighting Scots to a 1:28.31 finish.

Shugarts also placed third in two individual events, touching in a season-best 22.55 seconds in the 50 free and 50.64 in the 100 free.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Junior Krystal Wriglesworth (Clearfield) picked up points in four events as California University of Pennsylvania finished fourth among the five teams in the inaugural Lynn (Fla.) Spring Invitational at the outdoor McCusker Pool Complex Saturday.

Wriglesworth placed third in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 30.63 seconds and 16th in her first 100 individual medley with a 1:12.10 clocking.

She swam for two Vulcan ‘B’ relay teams, recording a 30.54-second leadoff backstroke leg for the 200 medley foursome that claimed sixth place in 2:02.26 and posting a 28.29 anchor leg for the 200 freestyle quartet that wound up eighth in 1:53.34.

EDINBORO — Sophomore Kara Thorp (Clearfield) earned fourth-place points in the 1,000-yard freestyle race in 12:29.07 for Edinboro in the Fighting Scots’ 108-97 Senior Day win over Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Shippensburg at McComb Fieldhouse Saturday.
