Marco Rubio picked up another prominent endorsement from a fellow lawmaker Wednesday, with House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz announcing he would campaign for Rubio this week.
The Florida senator’s presidential campaign announced Wednesday that Chaffetz would be campaigning for Rubio in New Hampshire on Friday, the latest big name from the House to hit the trail for Rubio.
“Marco Rubio is a conservative leader who understands the challenges facing American families in the 21st century,” the Utah Republican said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to hitting the campaign trail with Marco to talk about the future of our country and the importance of electing a next-generation conservative in 2016.”
Chaffetz will join Rubio in Concord, New Hampshire, on Friday, the campaign said.
Chaffetz’s predecessor atop the Oversight Committee, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-California, was in New Hampshire for Rubio on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. And Benghazi Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-South Carolina, campaigned for the presidential candidate in Iowa late last month.
All three are prominent conservatives in the House, and are generally popular among a swath of Republicans.
Rubio has picked up more endorsements than any other current lawmaker in the race, and is second only to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in support, according to FiveThirtyEight’s endorsement tracker. Rubio has 26 endorsements from the House and Senate with Chaffetz.
But though he trails Bush, most of Rubio’s endorsements have come in the last two months as he picks up steam in the race. And many of his supporters are rising stars in the party, fitting in with his campaign message of generational change.
