President Barack Obama stood in the White House on Tuesday, making a tough, emotional appeal for his new action on guns before an audience that included Amy Schumer, a comedian and actress who is an outspoken supporter of stricter gun laws.
Schumer had previously joined her cousin, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-New York, last August to push for a stronger background check system. The appearance came two weeks after a gunman killed two people with a legally purchased gun at a screening of her movie, “Trainwreck.”
Other well-known gun control advocates were also present at the White House announcement, including the musician Wale and former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. Five years ago, Giffords was wounded in a mass shooting in Tucson, Arizona, that killed six people and wounded 13.
Obama will speak more about these orders in a town hall event with CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Thursday in Fairfax, Virginia.
