It’s official: NFL star Cam Newton is a father.
Longtime girlfriend Kia Proctor gave birth to their first son on Christmas Eve. The Carolina Panthers quarterback waited nearly a week to confirm the news on Twitter on Wednesday night.
“My longtime girlfriend and I were extremely blessed to have a son last week. Our family is excited and thank you all for the well wishes!” he said.
“I’ve been quiet about this because I didn’t want to create a distraction for my team and appreciate the privacy in this joyous time.”
The news comes after days of speculation, according to the Charlotte Observer. Newton left in the middle of practice in Charlotte on December 24 to be in Atlanta for the birth. He returned to Charlotte on Saturday and went back to Atlanta on Sunday for a game against the Falcons.
Much ado was made by sports media when Newton celebrated a touchdown by cradling the ball as if it were a baby.
