Rep. Trey Gowdy will spend the final days of 2015 campaigning in Iowa with Marco Rubio and will offer the Florida senator his “full support,” a campaign aide told CNN Saturday.
The aide, however, stopped short of saying that Gowdy would officially endorse Rubio.
Gowdy, an influential South Carolina congressman who is perhaps best known for leading the recent House investigation into the 2012 Benghazi terror attacks, is scheduled to speak at six town halls in Iowa on Tuesday and Wednesday. The appearances are significant given that Gowdy represents a key early primary state.
“Marco is a rock solid conservative and a strong leader we can trust. I look forward to campaigning in Iowa with him, and introducing my good friend to voters across the state,” Gowdy said in a statement released by Rubio’s campaign Saturday.
Gowdy introduced Rubio at several campaign events in South Carolina last weekend. He has also co-hosted town halls with South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott over the fall that many Republican presidential hopefuls have attended, including Donald Trump, Ben Carson and Sen. Ted Cruz.
