Seatbelt and School Zone Violators in the Crosshairs

CLEARFIELD – Traffic details in Clearfield Borough are cracking down on violators.

At Thursday’s meeting, Officer Nathan Curry of the Clearfield Borough Police Department gave the council a report on the borough’s Thanksgiving “Click it or Ticket” enforcement.

Curry said the enforcement detail was made possible through a $1,050 “Buckle up” grant from PennDOT and federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Curry said the department made 57 vehicle contacts and issued nine seatbelt violations during the detail, which took place Nov. 23-30. There were 38 additional citations filed for driving-related offenses.

Curry explained that the officers can’t pull a vehicle over just for a seatbelt violation, but if they see another violation, they can cite the driver and or passengers who aren’t wearing their seatbelts in addition to the citation for the first violation.

Curry said the borough also conducted a speed detail in the school zone at St. Francis. He said with the help of the state police, the borough issued 25 citations in one hour, in the 15 mile-per-hour zone.

“It got to the point where were only citing people who were going 30 (MPH) or above. The only reason we were doing that was because we ran out of guys to write tickets,” Curry said.

He wanted to thank the officers who participated in the detail and warn residents to watch their speed in the school zone.
