A report of an armed person on or near campus was unsubstantiated, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s media relations department said as the school lifted a brief security alert early Wednesday.
The school had activated campus sirens, temporarily suspended classes and asked people to go indoors shortly before 9 a.m. ET as police checked an unconfirmed report that an armed subject was near the campus Army ROTC center and a chemistry building.
The school issued an all-clear notice about a half-hour later.
UNC at Chapel Hill has more than 29,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students.
