CURWENSVILLE – Moving into the District 9 Class A football semifinals, the task for the Curwensville Golden Tide surely doesn’t get any easier as it will play unbeaten Kane, the number two seeded squad in the playoffs.
The Wolves, 10-0, who took down Port Allegany in the first round 29-6, defeated Curwensville 35-6 in week seven of this season.
The Tide and Wolves will play Saturday, at 1 pm, at Mansell Stadium in DuBois.
Brockway, 9-2, and top seeded Redbank Valley, 8-2, will square off in the other semi-final contest at 6 pm, at the same venue.
Kane senior quarterback, Shane Rolick, had a huge night in the first meeting, scoring three rushing touchdowns and tossing one TD pass.
Of the 305 total yards on offense that the Wolves amassed, Rolick accounted for 185 of those yards with 119 on the ground and another 66 through the air.
The Tide had just 167 total yards of offense in the first game against Kane. Sophomore running back Nick Stewart rushed for 80 yards while junior wide receiver Zach Marshall hauled in four passes for 59 yards.
Hunter Johnson, a senior, had the lone score for the Tide, a one yard dive into the end zone in the second quarter.
Curwensville, 8-3 on the season, averages 35.9 per game with its high powered offense, and yields 19.9 per game on defense.
Senior quarterback Jake Terry has had a record setting season for the Tide with 1,500 yards passing and 19 touchdown strikes. Terry has completed 92 of 167 passes for a 55% completion rate.
The Curwensville running game continues to dominate most opponents, as sophomore standout running back Nick Stewart has romped for 1,721 yards and 23 rushing TD’s. Stewart, who averages 7.5 yards per carry, also has a receiving touchdown and another on a kickoff return for a total of 25 trips into the end zone on the season.
Hunter Johnson is also a backfield gem with 799 rushing yards and seven scores. Johnson, after 11 games, has averaged 6.4 yards per carry.
Of Terry’s 19 touchdown tosses, wide receiver Quamone Newkirk, another senior, has hauled in 13 of the touchdowns by air. Newkirk has 42 receptions for 781 yards and an average per catch of 18.6.
Two juniors, Zach Marshall and Eli Jacobs have also had a huge impact on the passing game for Curwensville.
Marshall has 16 receptions for 267 yards and two scores, while Jacobs has eight catches for another 251 yards, two touchdowns and a 31.4 yards per catch average.
Out of the backfield, Stewart has caught 16 tosses from Terry and one score.
Defensively the Golden Tide is led by Jacobs with 91 total tackles while Ben Junod, a senior, has 66, followed by Shae Bloom, another senior , checking in with 64. Sophomore Stephen McClure has a good year on defense with 59 tackles.
Hunter Lancaster paces the team in sacks, as the senior has recorded four, while Junod has three.
Marshall has the most interceptions with five and Terry has picked off three.
The Wolves also have a potent offense that averages 36.1 points per game and a defense that has allowed just 85 points on the year with three shutouts.
Kane features two 1,000 yard rushers in twin brothers, Shane and Tyler Rolick, both seniors.
Tyler has accumulated over 1,200 rushing yards while finding the end zone13 times on the ground.
Brother Shane has rushed for another 1,000 plus yards and leads the team with a total of 22 scores, 18 via the run.
