John Samuel Stricek 88, of Curwensville died Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2015 at Ridgeview Elder Care Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Curwensville after a lengthy illness.
Born Oct. 27, 1927, he was the son of Frank and Hedviga A. (Kubista) Stricek. Mr. Stricek retired from the U.S. Postal Service’s Curwensville Office in July of 1993 after 21 years of service.
Prior to that, he had been employed by McGregor’s Shirt Factory, Ryan Brothers Construction, Haley’s Sawmill, Swank Refractories and Dumont Airplane, Marine, and Electronics.
He joined the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1950 and was called to active duty on June 20, 1952. He was assigned to the USS Cassin Young DD793 and served in several ports of call, including Florida, New Orleans, Havana, England, Algiers, Italy, Greece, Turkey and the Azores.
He was a member of the St. Timothy Roman Catholic Church in Curwensville. He also enjoyed several hobbies, which included electronics, repairing lawn mower engines, solving crossword puzzles, hunting and fishing.
Surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Steve, Francis, Henry and Joe; and seven sisters, Helen, JoAnn, Mary, Verna, Betty, Ann and Millie. He was the last member of his generation.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Timothy’s Roman Catholic Church in Curwensville, with the Rev. Father Mark J. Mastrian as celebrant. Burial will be in the Crown Crest Memorial Park in Hyde.
Friends will be received from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chester C. Chidboy Funeral Home Inc. of Curwensville.
The Rosary will be recited by members of St. Timothy Altar and Rosary Society at 4:30 p.m. and a Scripture Vigil Service will be conducted at 7 p.m., both Thursday at the funeral home.
Military honors will be accorded at the church by members of the Clearfield Honor Guard.
