The campus of Washington College, a university in Chestertown, Maryland, was closed Monday due to a possible gun threat, the school announced on its website.
In a statement posted Monday morning, school authorities said they had been informed by the parents of a sophomore student that he had gone home and retrieved a gun.
“The parents have not been able to reach him and do not know where he is or where he is headed,” the statement said.
Out of “an abundance of caution,” all students and staff should shelter in place, school officials said, while others should stay away from the campus.
Local law enforcement officials were on campus and sweeps of the college were underway, the statement said.
It said updates would be posted on the school’s website as they became available.
Maryland State Police said there is no active threat but an investigation is continuing, CNN affiliate WBAL reported.
