The airport on the popular resort island of Bali reopened Thursday after volcanic ash in the area had caused more than a thousand flight cancellations in recent days.
Operations resumed at Bali’s Denpasar Airport on Thursday afternoon, said J.A. Barata, a spokesman for the Indonesian Transportation Ministry.
It had been closed since Tuesday evening, and officials had said previously that they expected it to remain shut until at least Friday morning.
Eruptions from Mount Rinjani, on the nearby island of Lombok, had spread a cloud of volcanic ash in the direction of Bali, posing a danger for aircraft engines.
The problem resulted in cancellations of both domestic and international flights, leaving many travelers stuck on the island or unable to reach it.
