Where will new ‘Trek’ take fans?

Where will the new “Star Trek” boldly go?

On Monday, CBS announced that yet another iteration of “Star Trek” will be hitting screens. This time, however, the show won’t necessarily be on the TV screen or the movie screen but rather on whatever screen is subscribing to CBS’ video on-demand platform, CBS All Access.

It’s another twist in the many voyages of the Starship Enterprise, which began 50 years ago next year. The enduring franchise has produced seven TV series, 12 movies and countless novels, comics and video games.

CBS didn’t reveal much else about the new series aside from the fact that Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote and produced the recent reboot films “Star Trek” and “Star Trek Into Darkness,” will be producing.

“The brand-new ‘Star Trek’ will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966,” noted a news release.

In other words, wait and see. The “Star Trek” canon, such as it is, hasn’t necessarily been consistent.

A number of TV writers praised the impact the deal could have on CBS’ bottom line, but fans were left wondering just what new world they might be wandering into. It’s certainly different than the one they used to occupy, the one that watched reruns for free in the 20th century.

And original “Star Trek” captain William Shatner, a popular social media presence, wondered what all the fuss was about.

“And yes, I heard about the new series. Why is it such a surprise? 3 movie deal and then a new series been in the cards since 2007-2008,” he tweeted.

Well, if nothing else, it will help perpetuate the “Star Trek”/”Star Wars” rivalry. You may have heard about this new movie …
