Hawaii shark attack injures child

Maui County Ocean and Safety responded to a supposed shark bite today involving a 16 year-old girl and her father on Kahana Beach near the Hololani Resort. The girl did not see anything when she was standing in water only about 2-3 feet deep before her dad felt something bump past him and bit her. She received medical attention from the Maui County Fire Department for lacerations and a 3 to 5 inch avulsion on her lower left calf before her family drove her to the hospital. The beach will be closed until at least tomorrow while officials reassess the situation.

A 10-year-old boy is recovering from a shark attack in Hawaii.

The unidentified child was bitten in the right leg Wednesday and is hospitalized in serious condition, according to Shayne Enright with the Honolulu Department of Emergency Services.

The attack happened off Makaha Beach along Oahu’s western shore.

Enright says the boy was about 50-60 yards in the water when he started yelling that he had been bitten.

A witness told CNN affiliate KHON that the child was body boarding when he saw him “get bumped up” by the shark.

Lifeguards rescued the victim and brought him back to shore, where they stabilized puncture wounds and a gash to his leg.

Ocean Safety officials advised swimmers to stay out of the water and posted shark warning signs along area beaches.

Wednesday’s incident is the seventh reported shark attack in Hawaii this year — the third in Oahu this month.
