Republicans won’t be the only ones catching heat tonight.
Future45, a new Republican-funded super PAC, is going up on the airwaves Wednesday with a new ad targeting Hillary Clinton’s handling of Libya, a week after Clinton spoke before the House Select Committee on Benghazi.
The ad shows video of Clinton testifying on October 22, saying, “I was responsible for working on the policy, both before and after the end of the Gadhafi regime.”
The narrator cuts in, saying, “Responsible for a disaster. More threats. More war.” The narrator concludes, “At least Hillary’s record doesn’t lie.”
The ad offers a broader takedown of Clinton’s approach to policy in Libya, pointing to the power vacuum that was left after then-Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was overthrown. The spot doesn’t specifically mention the 2012 attack in Benghazi that left a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans dead.
A source close to the group said the ad will run on national television before and after Wednesday’sd GOP debate in Boulder. The ad will also air in local markets in Iowa and New Hampshire, said the source, who declined to provide details on how much the super PAC is spending on its first ad buy.
The group is led by Brian Walsh, a Republican who has previously lead conservative organizations including the American Action Network. Ambassador Ron Weiser, a former Republican National Committee finance chairman, is leading the fundraising for the effort. The group has already attracted the support of prominent GOP donors, including hedge fund manager Paul Singer and the Ricketts family, owners of the Chicago Cubs, according to the source familiar with it.
CNN has reached out to the Clinton campaign for comment.
Future45 — a reference to electing the 45th president — compliments other GOP outside groups, such as America Rising, that have trained their fire on Clinton while Republicans battle to win the nomination.
After the 2012 presidential race, many Republicans felt they had missed an opportunity to keep the pressure on President Barack Obama during the prolonged GOP primary fight. This year, they’re hoping to avoid the same mistakes.
“Secretary Clinton’s testimony last week confirmed what people have long suspected — that she is in fact the architect of the failed foreign policies of the Obama administration that have left America less secure and the world more dangerous,” said Dan Conston, a senior adviser for the group. “Future45 will continue holding Secretary Clinton accountable and will work to educate the American people on why it would be a mistake to give her a promotion.”
