The ‘Evil Dead’ return: 6 Halloween shows to watch

The usual funny and cute Halloween fare is available this year on TV, but if you like your humor with a side of blood and guts, Bruce Campbell is there for you.

The star of the fan favorite “Evil Dead” trilogy is reprising his role of Ash after a 23-year absence, and it’s one of six shows — some scary and some sweet — to watch this Halloween week.

“Ash vs Evil Dead,” Saturday 9 p.m. ET, Starz

Ash has a new generation of characters to assist in fighting off the living dead, who have returned in the present day.

Ash may be older, but he can still wield a chainsaw.

“Ash the idiot has unleashed these long dormant forces and is gonna pay a horrible price at a time his life when he doesn’t want to be doing this s—,” Campbell said earlier this month at New York Comic Con.

“He’s just a crabby old man who wants to be drinking in a bowling alley, minding his own business and lying about how he lost his hand.”

Like the classic horror movie trilogy (never mind the 2013 movie reboot) that started in 1981, the new series promises heaping helpings of extreme violence and gore.

Campbell is joined in the new series by Lucy Lawless, and “Evil Dead” director Sam Raimi is producing the series.

Campbell said if the series does well, the “Evil Dead” might return to the big screen, but in the meantime, he pointed out that fans are getting more “Evil Dead” than other with a season of TV, as opposed to “one movie a decade.”

“The Simpsons,” Sunday 8 p.m., Fox

Can you believe it’s been 25 years since the annual “Simpsons” Halloween episodes began?

“Treehouse of Horror XXVI” sees the return of Sideshow Bob, and we’re told he will finally have his revenge on Bart Simpson this time (no worries, though, as these episodes have nothing to do with the show’s continuity).

“It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” Thursday 8 p.m., ABC

The beloved Halloween classic aired last week, but you have a second chance to catch it Thursday night.

“Bones,” “Sleepy Hollow,” Thursday 8 p.m., Fox

How exactly does “Sleepy Hollow’s” Ichabod Crane end up helping Dr. Brennan on “Bones”?

Fox hopes you’ll tune in Thursday for this Halloween crossover to find out.

“Grimm,” Friday 9 p.m., NBC

The sleeper hit series returns for a fifth season, in the aftermath of the shocking death of Juliette, which leaves Nick going off the deep end.

“Family Guy,” Sunday 9 p.m., Fox

Peter and his friends are in search of a Halloween movie idea and end up accidentally killing someone.
