News of Thursday’s deadly shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, quickly reverberated through Washington, with the state’s senior senator, Ron Wyden, visibly shaken and Sen. Jeff Merkley tweeting that he was praying for the victims and their families.
Wyden was visibly shaken as he rushed back to his office at the Dirksen Senate Office Building, declining to take questions from reporters. Merkley tweeted that he was praying for the victims and their families.
Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush also expressed his condolences on Twitter, calling the shooting a “senseless tragedy.”
At least 10 people were killed and more than 20 others were injured in the shooting, according to preliminary information from the Oregon State Police. Authorities say the shooter is in custody, and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on the scene and canine teams are en route to search for explosives, fire arms casings and ammunition, a spokesman said.
