With only 257 active wells, it isn’t the number of operators drilling in Fayette County that makes it integral to the natural gas market, but its location. Right next door are Washington and Greene County, both of which top the list of counties with the most shale gas wells, coming in first and fourth respectively, as well as nearby Allegheny County with the energy hub of Pittsburgh.
