Trevor Noah and other Africans hitting the big time

South African comedian Trevor Noah finally makes his debut Monday as the new host of “The Daily Show.”

He’s got some big shoes to fill. The show, which made its debut in 1996, is watched by millions of Americans and has fans around the world.

Noah confirmed the new gig back in March tweeting:

He now joins a growing list of Africans in arts and entertainment who are becoming household names worldwide.

One of them is Lupita Nyong’o, the actress from Kenya who’s been credited by many with redefining beauty standards for black women around the world. She has graced the cover of American Vogue on two different occasions — an honor hold by few black women.

Born in Mexico, Nyong’o got her big breakthrough playing the role of Patsey in the film “12 Years A Slave.” It earned her critical acclaim and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2014.

Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie also got rave reviews for her popular TEDx talk on gender equality in 2013. A self-proclaimed feminist, her words reached a brand new audience when Beyonce decided to sample the speech in the song Flawless.
