Michelle Obama takes China’s first lady to visit pandas at Washington zoo

First Lady Michelle Obama is taking the first lady of the People’s Republic of China Peng Liyuan on a trip to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo Friday morning.

“The First Ladies will visit the Panda House to commemorate over four decades of scientific collaboration between the United States and China around giant panda conservation,” the White House said in a statement.

Giant panda Mei Xiang lives at the zoo her cub, Bao Bao, who is two. Last month, one of two panda cubs died a few days after being born. The other new born cub, who has not yet been named, is also at the zoo.

The White House the first ladies will make a “special announcement,” without any additional details.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife arrived in the United States Wednesday and will be taking part in a state dinner at the White House Friday night.
