After summer of Trump, Producer Emilio Estefan, celebrities combat rhetoric aimed at Latinos

More than two dozen Latino musicians and celebrities joined forces with Grammy-winning producer Emilio Estefan to combat what he called “negativity about Latinos” in the current political discourse with a video entitled “We Are All Mexican.”

“I see a lot of hate and a lot of things and a lot of bringing people apart and I don’t think that’s the future of this country,” Estefan said on CNN’s “New Day” on Monday, where he premiered the video. “I need to select the president who brings love … brings everybody together and I don’t see that.”

The music video features Latino celebrities including Pitbull, Carlos Santana, the Black Eyed Peas’ Taboo, Eva Longoria, chef Jose Andrés and others. Its release is meant to coincide with National Hispanic Heritage Month, which spans from mid-September to mid-October.

The music video comes in the wake of a summer where the issue of immigration has been particularly polarizing, perhaps most notably through the rise of Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump, who angered many Latino advocacy groups in his presidential launch speech when he referred to some Mexican undocumented immigrants as “rapists” and “killers.” He’s also called for an end to birth-right citizenship.

Estefan made no mention of Trump in his CNN interview Monday. The video also includes several non-Latino celebrities such as Kathy Griffith and Whoopi Goldberg.

The music video spotlights Latinos many accomplishments, from the stage to the U.S. military.

“This is a way to celebrate and to recognize the American dream,” Estefan said.
