One killed, one missing after boat collision off Catalina Island

The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended a search and rescue mission for a missing boater off the coast of Southern California who went missing after a deadly collision at sea.

No reason was given for the suspension.

Earlier, Coast Guard spokeswoman Sondra-Kay Kneen said one of the missing boater’s fellow passengers was killed and the other three were injured when the dinghy they were all in collided with another vessel about a quarter of a mile east of Catalina Island.

Kneen said the Coast Guard received a call from a good Samaritan at 1:21 a.m.

Catalina is located in the Pacific Ocean some 20 miles southwest of Los Angeles.

Kneen said one of the injured passengers sustained a head injury, while the the other two suffered only minor injuries. All three were taken by helicopter to the UCLA Medical Center, she said.

No injuries or missing persons were reported from the other vessel involved.
