San Antonio student freed after ordeal in high school safe

We’ve heard of high school students getting trapped in lockers or tall garbage cans, but a safe?

That’s what happened Friday to a junior at Edison High School in San Antonio, Texas.

The San Antonio Fire Department rescued the 16-year-old boy who got locked in an unused safe in the school’s junior ROTC room.

“He is in good condition and doing well,” Leslie Price, a spokeswoman for the San Antonio school district.

It was unclear how the boy became trapped in the safe.

Before extracting the boy, the fire department drilled holes in the back of the safe to allow oxygen in.

School district spokeswoman Michelle Jimenez described the lockbox as a sturdy, 40-year-old government-issued safe.

Junior ROTC is a military training curriculum offered as a high school elective.
