LHU Clearfield Invites Public to Fall Convocation

CLEARFIELD – The public is invited to attend LHU Clearfield’s Convocation ceremony being held on Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.

Convocation is the celebration of the new academic year that includes guest speakers and recognition of the Clearfield campus scholarship recipients.

Special guest speaker for the event will be Bruce Parkhill. Parkhill is a 1971 graduate of Lock Haven University.

While attending LHU, Parkhill was a multi-sport athlete excelling in soccer, basketball and track and field. He earned All-American honors (Division 1,2, and 3) as a soccer goalie, was captain of the basketball team earning All-Conference and All-District honors, and was named conference and district champion in track and field (javelin).

He was recently inducted as a charter member of the Lock Haven University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Parkhill served as the head basketball coach at William & Mary College (W&M) from 1977 to 1983. His last team at W&M earned the first post-season bid in school history, and also went undefeated in conference play.

He was selected Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Coach of the Year and National Association of Basketball Coaches South Coach of the Year. He is a member of the W&M Hall of Fame.

Parkhill also served as the head basketball coach for the Pennsylvania State University from 1983 to 1995. His teams won the only conference championship in program history, advanced to the second round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament, played in two National Invitation Tournament (NIT) final fours, and had five 20-plus win seasons. He was also named the Atlantic Ten Coach of the Year. During his 18 years serving as head coach, all but one of Parkhill’s senior athletes received their degree.

Parkhill is a native of State College and earned a Master’s degree from the University of Virginia. He was deeply involved in work to support the community, including Honorary Chairman: Centre County Toys for Tots, Easter Seals Campaign, United Way Campaign, PA Special Olympics, American Cancer Society Walk for Life and initiated the Coaches vs. Cancer fundraiser at Penn State.
