Former Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott endorses Tom Kasich

Former Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott announced Tuesday he is endorsing Republican presidential hopeful John Kasich, adding some firepower for the Ohio governor in the South.

Lott, a former Senate majority leader, cited his service with Kasich and the former House budget chairman’s experience in his decision.

“We need his keen budget mind in the White House to help get our federal budget reined in. His long experience on national security and foreign policy is just as critical,” Lott said in a statement Tuesday.

Lott’s endorsement adds to big pickups by Kasich recently, including Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley and veteran New Hampshire Republican Tom Rath.

He’s also received big praise from former NBA star Charles Barkley.
