Rick Santorum said Tuesday that while he differs over Donald Trump’s calls to bomb Iraq’s oil fields, he otherwise largely agrees with the real estate mogul’s approach to the troubled country.
“I have serious problems with the government of Iraq, too, and it is incredibly influenced by the government of Iran and is doing the bidding of the government of Iran,” the former Pennsylvania senator said on “The Lead with Jake Tapper.”
Trump has been dismissive of Iraq’s government, suggesting that it doesn’t matter what officials there think of U.S. actions to combat ISIS’s rise there.
“I think the oil field idea is a bad idea, but his idea that the government of Iran and Iraq are in cahoots and working together and causing problems for the United States to be successful is absolutely true,” Santorum said.
“In this case, the substance, I generally agree with Donald Trump,” he said.
Santorum, the winner of the 2008 Iowa caucuses, is languishing at the bottom of polls of the 2016 Republican presidential field, struggling to top 1% support.
