5 things to know for your new day — Friday, August 7

Trump takes center stage. Schumer is a no vote on Iran. And Jon Stewart calls it a wrap.

It’s Friday and here are the 5 things to know for your New Day.

GOP DEBATE

No. 1 in the books: Did Donald Trump win the first GOP debate of the 2016 election campaign? Who knows, but he was certainly the center of attention. From his refusal to rule out a third-party campaign to his ridicule of comedian Rosie O’Donnell, he was almost always in the limelight. Trump even found time to lob a few of his trademark barbs at his rivals. A Bloomberg survey released Tuesday had Trump at 21%, handing him a double-digit lead over both former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who was at 10%, and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who was at 8%.

IRAN NUCLEAR

Schumer’s out: You can put New York Sen. Chuck Schumer in the “no” column on the Iran nuclear deal. The influential Democrat announced last night that he will oppose the package. His announcement came after two of his Democratic colleagues — fellow New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire — both said they would back the agreement. Lawmakers have until mid-September to decide which way to vote.

OFFICER KILLED

Captured: Grover Cannon wasn’t on the lam long after he allegedly shot and killed Shreveport police Officer Thomas LaValley. Louisiana State Police announced the 27-year-old’s arrest with a Facebook post and a picture of a shirtless Cannon in the back of a squad car. LaValley is the 20th law enforcement officer to die this year in the United States at the hands of a violent suspect.

LEGIONNAIRES’ OUTBREAK

Numbers climb: The death toll from the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak in New York is up to 10. There are a total of 100 cases and all of them originated in the same area of the South Bronx. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said the afflicted were older adults with additional underlying medical problems. Most people recover, but between 5% to 30% of those who get the disease die, according to the CDC.

JON STEWART

Jon Voyage: Jon Stewart ended his 16-year run on “The Daily Show” in style and with plenty of his old buddies. Former correspondents Stephen Colbert, John Oliver, Ed Helms, Steve Carell, Olivia Munn and many others joined in the farewell ‘love fest.’ The entertainment was pretty good, too. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played Stewart off with “Land of Hopes and Dreams” and part of “Born to Run.”
