Vehicle crashes into south barricade of U.S. Capitol building

A vehicle crashed into the south barricade of the U.S. Capitol building on Friday morning, and authorities have taken the driver into custody.

U.S. Capitol Police are currently investigating the incident and the driver of the vehicle, who has not been identified. The D.C. Fire Department is on scene, and there are street closures in effect in the immediate surrounding area.

The vehicle did not break through the barricade to enter the Capitol’s secure perimeter.

According to a law enforcement source, the individual rammed the barricade at high speed and appeared “imbalanced” but there is currently no indication that this person posed broader security threat.

As of Friday morning, the barricade remained closed and Capitol staff were advised to avoid the area until further notice.
