Hearing set for woman in New York prison escape

A July 28 arraignment is scheduled for Joyce Mitchell, charged with helping two murderers escape from an upstate New York prison.

Mitchell, 51, is charged with promoting prison contraband, a felony, and criminal facilitation, a misdemeanor.

Authorities said she provided Richard Matt and David Sweat with tools they used to cut through cell walls for their escape from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York. Mitchell was a prison employee.

A massive manhunt ended in late June when law enforcement officers fatally shot Matt and recaptured Sweat.

Mitchell has pleaded not guilty. She faces up to eight years behind bars if convicted, authorities say.
