Suicide questions dominate the Sandra Bland case. Terror fears cloud President Obama’s Kenya visit. And the U.S. men’s soccer team suffers a shocking loss.
It’s Thursday, and here are five things to know for your New Day.
SANDRA BLAND
‘Yes’ or ‘no’?: Did Sandra Bland kill herself? Her family says she was never suicidal, but Texas authorities said Bland told the county jailer that she had previously tried to kill herself. Authorities also released jail intake forms yesterday that appear to show she answered “yes” to questions about attempting suicide and having suicidal thoughts. But another form seems to contradict that, with the word “no” appearing next to questions about mental illness and attempted suicide.
PRESIDENTIAL VISIT
Terror fears: Will President Obama be safe when he visits Kenya this week? U.S. officials say of course, but there is concern as parts of Kenya have been plagued by al-Shabaab violence. Officials say the militants won’t get anywhere near Obama, as security will be extremely tight, but there are fears they may seek out softer targets — like schools and shopping malls — during his visit. The U.S. military has conducted air strikes against al-Shabaab this week in its home base of Somalia.
BILL COSBY
Under oath: A 10-year-old deposition seems to have solidly turned the public against Bill Cosby. If famed women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred has her way, he’ll have to deal with another one within a month. That’s because the California Supreme Court denied the comedian’s request to review a case against him, which means a civil suit filed by Judith Huth can continue. Huth says Cosby sexually assaulted her in 1974 when she was 15. Huth is represented by Allred, who wants to schedule a deposition with Cosby in the next 30 days.
SALMONELLA
Outbreak: Sixty-two cases of salmonella in 11 states have been linked to sushi made with frozen raw tuna. Most of the people who got sick ate the sushi within a week of developing symptoms. So far, no deaths have been reported. The tuna — made by the Osamu Corporation — is being recalled.
SOCCER
Gold shocker: U.S. soccer fans — still in the afterglow of the U.S. Women’s National Team’s World Cup triumph — were brought back down to Earth last night when the U.S. men’s team lost to Jamaica 2-1 in a Gold Cup semifinal. The Jamaicans scored two first-half goals and never looked back. Jamaica moves on to face Mexico in the final.
