Two dead in series of shootings in Maine

A man wanted in a deadly rampage that spanned nearly 24 hours and several towns in northern Maine was arrested Friday afternoon, Maine State Police said at a news conference.

Anthony Lord is accused of shooting five people, two of them fatally, said Lt. Sean Hashey, a spokesman for the Maine State Police.

Lord, 35, was arrested without incident at an uncle’s house. He is being held at Aroostook County Jail and will be arraigned early next week.

Lord will face two charges of murder, one of kidnapping, and other counts, Hashey said. A 21-year-old woman, Brittany Irish, was with Lloyd when he was captured.

Her boyfriend, Kyle Hewitt, was one of two men killed. Kevin Tozier, 58, was killed while working at a wood lot where the suspect is accused of shooting Tozier and another worker while stealing a truck.

The three wounded victims are expected to survive, authorities said.

A fire, a reported robbery and a series of shootings

The incidents started Thursday night with a barn fire next to the Irish house in Benedicta, in northern Maine. Lord is a suspect in the suspicious blaze, Hashey said.

On Friday, about 4:40 a.m., a house about 6 miles away in Silver Ridge was the scene of a robbery and assault. A man was beaten and guns and a truck were stolen, Hashey said. Then 10 minutes later some windows and a door were shot out at the home of the suspect’s brother in Benedicta.

Then calls came in about two more shootings, at the Irish home. Brittany Irish’s mother, 55-year-old Kim Irish, had been wounded and Hewitt, 22, fatally hit. Both were flown by helicopter to a hospital. Carlton Eddy, who was driving near the house, was shot in the shoulder while in his pickup. Police believe Lord forced Brittany Irish to leave with him.

Not long after that a police officer spotted the stolen truck near Interstate 95. A man in the truck shot at the officer, who was not hurt but lost sight of the vehicle.

Thirty minutes elapsed before there were reports of a double shooting at a wood lot in Lee, south of Benedicta. Tozier was killed and Clayton McCarthy was wounded.

On Friday afternoon, Lord’s uncle called police, who came to the home in Houlton and arrested Lord.

Authorities said he has a criminal history and is a registered sex offender.
