Former Rep. Michael Grimm sentenced to 8 months for tax evasion

Michael Grimm, the former Republican congressman from Staten Island who memorably threatened to throw a reporter off a Capitol balcony, was sentenced Friday to eight months in federal prison for evading taxes on his health food restaurant, “Healthalicious”.

The former Staten Island Republican was charged in April 2014, but stalwartly refused to resign his seat for months, until last winter. Grimm announced last December that he would resign, shortly after pleading guilty to tax evasion charges.

Federal prosecutors showed that Grimm under-reported $900,000 in receipts from his Manhattan health food restaurant from 2007-2009.

Grimm may best be remembered for threatening to break in half “like a boy” a reporter and throw him off a balcony who questioned him about his campaign finances during an incident caught on camera at the Capitol in January 2014.
