Natural causes led to South Carolina church fire, officials say

Weather appears to have caused the fire that gutted a traditionally black church in South Carolina this week, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has concluded.

Based on reports of lightning in the area and other factors, Tuesday’s fire at Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Greeleyville, South Carolina, is “best classified as natural,” SLED said in a statement released Thursday.

Investigators found no indications of criminal intent, the statement reads.
