CLEARFIELD – The Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library’s Every Hero Has A Story! summer reading program continued last week and celebrated Cape Less Heroes.
Attendees of all ages enjoyed a visit from Shaver’s Creek, the school-aged youth learned about animal heroes throughout history and adults enjoyed an interesting botany program presented by Sue Shaffner.
Every Hero Has A Story! summer program celebrates Community Heroes in week four with another fun and eventful week of programming for all ages.
Read-to-Me participants are invited to meet special visitor, “Smokey Bear” on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. At the program, children will learn about wildfires, fire safety and campfire rules.
Also on Tuesday at 2 p.m., young adults are invited to unmask your inner artist at the “DIY Bleach T-Shirt” program. Attendees are asked to bring a dark-colored, pre-washed, cotton shirt to the event. The deadline to register for the program is by 5 p.m. Monday.
The school-aged A & B group will meet on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. for “Community Hero Visit.” Youth will learn from McGruff the Crime Dog, get finger-printed and become educated on the importance of online safety. Attendees will also receive a book from representatives from the Clearfield First Book program.
The youth programming wraps up with “Think Your Drink” on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. for school-aged A & B. The event will be presented by PSU Cooperative Extension representative, Ronda Stiles, and shares important tips to keep your drinks healthy. Participants will have the opportunity to make their own smoothie. Space is limited and registration is required.
Throughout the summer, participants of the Every Hero Has A Story! reading program, will experience at least one of the five literacies (Basic, Financial, Information, Health, and or Civic & Social) at all library events as part of the PA Forward | Pennsylvania Libraries initiative. The PA Forward initiative supports the efforts of libraries across the state as leaders in community education.
The library reminds youth participants from birth through 11 years of age to pick up earned tickets for their minutes read when visiting the library. The week three reading prize drawing for four Bullpen Box Spikes game tickets will be held on Monday.
The winner will be notified by phone. To be eligible for the drawing, participants must have tickets in by Thursday at 9 p.m. The library will be closed on Friday and Saturday in observation of the Independence Day holiday.
The summer reading program is open to all youth ages birth through the completion of fifth grade and all young adults who have completed sixth grade through eleventh grade. In addition, adults and recent high school graduates may join the adult program. Registration is available by visiting the library during regular business hours.
Shaw Public Library is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Fridays from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.
