DuBois–“There is no way I could be sitting in this position without someone like [Steve Swope] these last fifteen years,” said City Manager John “Herm” Suplizio.
Public Works Director Steve Swope’s retirement was announced at the City of DuBois’ Monday night council meeting. Public Works Superintendent Ron “Rugszy” Cloak was said to be Swope’s successor. Suplizio and the council gave Swope tons a praise for his years of work, and at what point Swope was brought to tears.
I’d just like to everyone. The Mayor, Herm, everyone. Not everyone can say they are happy to come into work every day, but I was,” said Swope.
Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. was awarded the Showers Field Parking Lot Paving project. Hawbaker came in as the lowest bidder at $87,800.00. Five bids were sent out, but only three were sent into the city. The next lowest bid was $102,360.00.
The City approved Denny Day’s conditional use of 313 Spring Avenue, DuBois to allow progress to move ahead. The property will be converted into seven apartments.
“Everlyn Kirkwood, to me, is the epitome of responsible home ownership,” said Diane.
Counci lmember Diane Bernardo praised recently deceased DuBois resident Evelyn R. Kirkwood for her ceaseless efforts to keep her own property and neighborhood cleaned up.
“I think the loss of such a conscientious person has hurt so much in light of our recent problems with fighting blight in our community,” said Bernardo
Council members Randy Schmidt and Jim Aughenbaugh were excused from the meeting.

- The council approved the Alzheimer’s Association’s request to use the city park and pavilion “A” as part of their annual “Walk to End Alzheimers”. The walk will take place Sept 26 from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Mike Federici was appointed to the Redevelopment Authority to fill a vacancy left open by Linda Schneider retiring.
- Solicitor Toni Cherry was directed to draft an ordinance setting the fees for the assessments on North Clark Street.
- City Engineer Chris Nasuti reported water was pumped from the new wells to the plant, but instrumentation needs ironed out.
