Library Announces New Summer Reading Program

Clearfield– Joseph & Elizabeth Shaw Public Library kicked off the Every Hero Has A Story! summer reading program with an exciting show by M&M Magic sponsored by the Clearfield Legion and the Clearfield VFW.

Magicians, Bobby and Danny Mehok, two brothers from the DuBois area, entertained a crowd of more than 150 summer readers to kickoff the program lineup for 2015.

The theme for week two is Bam! Pow! Wow!  and promises fun and excitement for the youth, young adult, and adult summer reading participants.

Preschoolers are invited to the library on Tuesday, June 23rd at 10:30 a.m. to the “Come as Your Favorite Superhero” program.  Attendees may come dressed as their favorite hero and will enjoy an obstacle course and awesome dance party.

The first Young Adult Unmask program is at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23rd.  Trail Blazer Adventures representatives will present, “Introduction to Paddle Boarding” to teens.  Registration is required for this event by calling the library.  Join us for a fun introduction to paddle boarding on the Susquehanna River.

Adult summer readers will also have their first program on Tuesday evening, June 23rd, at 6:30 p.m.  The Author Spotlight:  Debbie Marsh program includes an author presentation, group discussion, and book signing.  Books will be available to purchase at the event and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Shaw Public Library.  Light refreshments will be served.

“Superhero Training Camp,” is offered for the School Age A & B reading groups, on Wednesday, June 24th at 10:30 a.m. Attendees will step into a secret identity and make a cape then join in on an obstacle course challenge.  Participants are asked to bring an oversized t-shirt from home to participate.

The School Aged B will conclude the week with “Rockets and Power Cuffs” program at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 25th.  At the program, attendees will design a superhero inspired wrist band/power cuff to complete their superhero attire.  To finish the program, participants will learn what makes a rocket go and have the opportunity to build a balloon rocket.  The program is a S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activity and promises to be an entertaining and educational opportunity for all.

Throughout the summer, participants of the Every Hero Has A Story!  reading program, will experience at least one of the five literacies (Basic, Financial, Information, Health, and/or Civic & Social) at all library events as part of the PA Forward | Pennsylvania Libraries initiative.  The PA Forward initiative supports the efforts of libraries across the state as leaders in community education.

The library reminds readers to pick up earned tickets for their minutes read when visiting the library.  The youth summer reading prize drawing for week two will be (4) grand stand level tickets for the Altoona Curve.  The winner will be announced on Monday, June 29th.  To be eligible for the drawing, participants must have tickets in to the library by Saturday, June 27th at 5:00 p.m.

The summer reading program is open to all youth ages birth through the completion of fifth grade and all young adults who have completed sixth grade through eleventh grade.  In addition, adults and recent high school graduates may join the adult program.  Registration is available by stopping by the Shaw Public Library during regular business hours.
