House GOP Leaders postpone vote on trade bill

In another sign President Barack Obama’s trade agenda is in trouble, House Republican leaders postponed a vote on a key bill that is linked to fast track ?legislation.

A vote on a program to help displaced workers was expected to come as early as Tuesday after the trade package was defeated on Friday. But on Monday night, House GOP leaders plan to add an extension for a vote on trade adjustment assistance until July 30. A vote on moving that deadline will come Tuesday in the House, as part of a procedural vote on another bill.

This does not mean the House will wait until July 30 to bring TAA to the floor; it gives the President and the Republican leadership extra time.

“We remain committed to getting TPA done, and this will give the president more time to communicate the consequences of not moving forward with his party.” said Kevin Smith, spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner.
