5 things to know for your New Day — Monday, June 8

New video puts police under fire. The hunt for two escaped killers continues. And it’s time for the Women’s World Cup.

It’s Monday, and here are five things to know for your New Day:

TEXAS POOL VIDEO

Video melee: Police trying their best to deal with rowdy teens or another case of police brutality? That’s the question after a chaotic YouTube video surfaced over the weekend showing a McKinney, Texas, cop throwing a bikini-clad teen girl to the ground and pulling his gun on a couple of teen boys while trying to break up a pool party. The officer is on administrative leave and the police department is investigating.

NEW YORK ESCAPEES

Where are they?: The two murderers who escaped from prison in upstate New York now have a $100,000 reward on their heads. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the reward Sunday, a day after Richard Matt and David Sweat somehow managed to get out of a maximum security prison. Everybody is looking for them: state officials, U.S. Marshals Service, the FBI. Eyes are being kept on both borders too since the Canadian border is nearby and one of the killers has ties to Mexico.

SOUTH KOREA

Mers fears: South Korea is in a near panic as it struggles to contain the outbreak. More than 2,300 people are quarantined and close to 2,000 schools are temporarily closed. In all 87 people have contracted the virus and six have died. Doctors and scientists say MERS isn’t easily transmitted, but there’s a lot about this virus they don’t know about, since it only surfaced about three years ago. WHO experts are headed to the country to assess the public heath response.

G7

Still important: We know. You saw this item was about the G7 and your eyes started to glaze over. Does anything that happens at these meetings ever actually affect us? That’s probably another story for another day, but let’s focus on this: even though the Russians were kicked out of the group last year over the situation in Ukraine, Russia still dominated the first day of meetings yesterday in Germany. President Obama wants to continue sanctions against Russia; some of his G7 allies are skeptical, mainly because the sanctions have done little to halt Russian aggression. While in Germany, Obama will also meet with Iraq’s Prime Minister today, trying to get a grip on ISIS.

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP

The Re-vengers?: Members of the U.S. women’s soccer team admit they aren’t over losing on penalty kicks to Japan in 2011. They want revenge, and not just against defending champion Japan, but apparently the entire World Cup field. And we all know sports is at its most fun to watch when a team has a major chip on its shoulder. So if you only watch soccer during the World Cup action, today is another great opportunity to restart that on-again/off-again relationship with the sport. Revenge-seeking Team USA plays Australia later today. Let’s see if they make the Aussies pay.

Those are your five biggies for the day. Here are a few others that are brewing and have the Internet buzzing.

Dancing machine: Guy does the same dance in 100 different places. Sure, why not.

Walmart rock stars: A toy guitar is all you need to rock Walmart.

Time travel: Breeze through a century of fashion in about 120 seconds.

What the hail: This June hail storm in Tennessee will make you forget it’s almost summer.
