CLEARFIELD – Veterans Affairs Director Betina Nicklas announced upcoming veterans outreach programs during Tuesday’s workshop meeting of the Clearfield County Commissioners.
She said a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program will be held from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. June 10 at the county’s administrative offices. She said it will assist veterans in finding a better job, seeking an education for a better job and other topics.
Also, Nicklas will present information on benefits for veterans, dependents and survivors June 16 at the Mountain Laurel Health & Rehabilitation Center, Clearfield. She will present programs at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Nicklas said she’s been developing relationships and working closely with the staff at the local nursing homes. She said she’s trying to educate the staff, patients and families on veterans’ benefits available to them.
On Jan. 1, Nicklas said the Department of Veterans Affairs eliminated the net worth portion of veteran healthcare application. She said this previously prevented many veterans from receiving healthcare through the department.
Nicklas said this eligibility change makes healthcare benefits more accessible to more veterans. She said the Department of Veterans Affairs now only considers a veteran’s gross household income and deductible expenses from the previous year.
