A U.S. postal annex in New Jersey was evacuated Friday because of what an agency spokesman called a “sweet odor.”
Police and a hazardous materials team responded to the annex and postal carrier hub on U.S. Highway 130 in Hamilton, according to U.S. Postal Service spokesman Raymond Daiutolo Sr. and Hamilton police Lt. Richard Mastropolo.
Mastropolo said police were called after a postal carrier passed out. It’s not clear whether it had to do with the odor at the site.
Hamilton is a township in western New Jersey, near Trenton and a few miles from Pennsylvania.
“We are working with authorities to determine the evacuation’s cause,” the U.S. Postal Service tweeted CNN at midday Friday. “Our concern is the safety of employees, customers & mail.”
