Clearfield Councilman Questions Water Heater Purchase

CLEARFIELD – A member of Clearfield Borough is questioning the efficiency of a new water heater for the joint police/fire department building.

At Thursday’s work session, Councilman Jim Kling questioned the proposed purchase of a 45-gallon, stainless steel hot water tank, with coils to heat water from the boiler at the building, located at 14 S. Front St. The purchase would cost about $1,950.

Kling said he was concerned about how much water is wasted using the proposed system. He said the water has to pass through 60-70 feet of pipe before hot water comes out of the faucets in the bathrooms or kitchen areas.

Kling asked about installing two electric water-heaters, which he believes would be more energy-efficient and would waste less water.

Borough Operations Manager Leslie Stott said representatives from Hoyt Plumbing had looked at the building and recommended the tank and coil system. She said the representative feels the two electric water heaters would not be prudent.

Kling said he doesn’t want to go against the recommendation of a reputable company, but he would still like to see how much water is being wasted by having the water heating system so far away from both the fire department and the police department.
