The Streak Ends as Curwensville Golden Tide Defeat Glendale

CURWENSVILLE — For the Golden Tide baseball team this season, it has been a year that started late, and has been tough.  It took nearly two weeks for the year to begin due to the rain in March and April, which led to difficult field conditions.  When the team finally took to the field, the team won the opening game of the year, with a lot of smiles and a lot of happiness.

Since then, it has been a struggle.  The Tide have lost the last 10 games, and have just wanted to win one game to bring the spirits up in the dugout.

On Wednesday, the Tide would take to their home diamond as they would host the Glendale Vikings.

After all the difficulty that has happened this season, it only took six innings to change all that around.  Curwensville was on an offensive mission on their home turf, and the bats were swinging at every moment.  The Tide would blast their opposition with 15 hits, while only giving up one themselves, as the losing streak came to a sliding halt when Curwensville defeated Glendale in a 13-3 final that only went six innings.

The pitching for Curwensville was flawless all afternoon.  Jake B. Stiles started the game, pitching the first three and a third innings, yielding the three lone runs for the Knights.  Once Bryce Timko came in, he picked up right where his teammate left off.

Even only pitching one and two-thirds innings, he earned the victory with his efforts in giving up no runs, no hits, and no walks in his effort.

On the opposite side, Matt Yeckley was dishing for all the wrong reasons.  He would get tagged with the loss after four and two-thirds innings of work, giving up 12 runs, five of them earned, and 12 hits.

Glendale would start the scoring in the top of the first as an RBI-single by Justin Hommer plated Anthony Barnhart.  A fielding error on the play would then bring in Luke Mulhollen.  In the bottom of the inning, Jake Terry scored on a sacrifice fly by A.J. Bloom.

The second inning is when Curwensville took the lead, and never looked back.

An RBI-single by Austin Butlin would plate Timko to tie the game. An RBI-single scored Noah Strickland, and then Terry would reach home on an error, giving the home team a 4-2 lead.

Another three runs would come in the next inning, as Hunter Lancaster and Timko each came home on RBI-singles, while Jake C. Stiles reached home on an error.

Glendale’s final run came in the fourth inning, an unearned run scored by Hommer.

Curwensville poured it on in the bottom of the fifth inning with five runs, the most they earned in one inning all season.  A sacrifice fly by Strickland brought in Jake C. Stiles.  Then an RBI-single brought in Terry, and then both Jake B. Stiles and Lancaster each scored on an error.

In the bottom of the sixth Strickland singled to start the inning.  Terry then followed with a double, and finally Jake B. Stiles singled to plate Strickland, making the score 13-3, and at that moment umpires were told the score and the game was over due to the 10-run rule.

The Tide now have a couple days to savor the win as they are on the road this Friday to take on the Black Knights of Moshannon Valley.
