William “Sarge” Stevens, 87, of Hollidaysburg and formerly of Osceola Mills died Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at the Hollidaysburg Veterans Home in Hollidaysburg.
Born Aug. 14, 1927 in Osceola Mills, he was the son of the late Herbert B. Stevens and Nellie Mae (Sando) Stevens Nichols.
Mr. Stevens was a member of the Osceola Mills Presbyterian Church.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He retired from the U.S. Army as a sergeant and he retired from Con-Rail.
He was a member of the VFW No. 5020, Osceola Mills; the American Legion No. 313, Osceola Mills; the Columbia Fire Co., Osceola Mills; Fire Police; F&AM No. 515, Osceola Mills; the Altoona Consistory; the Jaffa Shrine, Altoona; the Clearfield Royal Arch Chapter No. 228; the Moshannon Council No. 56, R.&S.M.M.; the Moshannon Commandery No. 74, K.T; the Osceola Mills Honor Guard; the Clearfield County Volunteer Firemen’s Association; the Disabled American Veterans; and the St. Anthony Society, Osceola Mills.
He was the Osceola Mills Citizen of the Year in 2006 and the Outstanding Community Worker of the Year for Osceola Mills Borough in 1994. His hobbies were community and cemetery work.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Stevens was preceded in death by his step-father, Frank Nichols; two sisters, Viola Smith and Lena Mae Johnson; and two brothers, Herbert Stevens and George Stevens.
He is survived by two sisters, Gertrude Kassab and her husband, Gabe of Pittsburgh and Mary Weaver and her husband, Jerry of Clymer, NY.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Osceola Mills Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Robert Bruinooge and the Rev. Dr. Mary Jo Bruinooge officiating. Burial will be at the Umbria Cemetery in Osceola Mills.
Friends will be received from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Friday at the Heath Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Osceola Mills and from 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of the funeral service at the church.
Masonic Memorial Services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and Graveside military honors will be accorded by the Osceola Mills Honor Guard.
