HUSTON TOWNSHIP – A bicyclist sustained serious facial injuries in an accident involving a passenger car Saturday on Beaver Road in Huston Township, reported the state police at Philipsburg.
According to the report, Jack L. Rector of Osceola was traveling downhill in a series of “S” turns on his bicycle. He was engaged in a bicycle road race, which started in the area of the Black Moshannon State Park. Rector was traveling with a large number of racers.
Rector and other racers were across the centerline while negotiating a downhill, right-hand turn. At the same time, a car was approaching from the opposite direction. Its operator veered to the right to avoid the oncoming bicyclists, state police said.
However, Rector’s bicycle struck the left, front corner of the car. Rector subsequently struck the windshield before going airborne and landing on the shoulder of the roadway. Rector was transported from the scene and then flown to UPMC Altoona with serious facial injuries, according to the report.
Rector was wearing a bicycle helmet at the time of the accident, state police said.
