Six missing after storm strikes regatta in Mobile Bay, Alabama

At least six people are missing after a severe storm capsized several sailboats in Mobile Bay, Alabama, Saturday afternoon during a regatta, said Coast Guard Public Information Officer Carlos Vega.

Mobile County Sheriff Jeff Carter said his department is reporting that a fatality may have occurred. Besides overturned sailboats, one vessel hit a bridge, he said.

As many as 40 sailboats participated in Saturday event, known as the Dauphin Island Race, which is a regional event, Carter said.

The Coast Guard and other agencies were on the scene Saturday night, Vega said.

The Fairhope Yacht Club sponsors the Dauphin Island Race, according to the club website. The club says this is the 57th year for the event.
